For Whistler, a relatively small town of only 10,000 permanent residents, that’s a very impressive feat to pull off. In one year, Whistler Blackcomb receives over 30 feet of snow over 8 thousand acres of trails, providing a winter sports paradise for skiers and snowboarders of all skill levels.

When traveling in from all parts of the world, most travelers fly in and arrive at YVR Vancouver international Airport. From there, Whistler is about 135km north of the airport. Now, there are a variety of ways to get there—everything from hitchhiking, taking a bus or taxi, to chartering a plane or helicopter. Yes there are many ways to approach this. Let’s rule out the hitchhiking, because we consider it a little dangerous (though not illegal to up the Sea to Sky Highway), and let’s also rule out chartering a plane or helicopter, because the majority of people heading up to Whistler just wouldn’t do that. Let’s approach this from a practical perspective for the average majority of people looking for transportation to get up to Whistler from the airport or from somewhere in Greater Vancouver in general. Let’s look at the three most common means of transportation that people heading up to Whistler will take: a limousine service, a bus or a taxi. Each has its benefits and the most practical choice varies between each situation. To define “practical”, let’s look at the cost and convenience of each method.

BUS TO WHISTLER
A bus ticket up to Whistler from Vancouver will cost you about $70 per person, which isn’t too bad. Convenience-wise, taking a bus isn’t ideal. You’ll need to reserve your bus ticket in advance, and then you’ll need to potentially find your own transportation to get to the bus station before the designated departure time. Once your gear is loaded onto the bus, the ride is actually quite nice since you’re high and elevated giving you a nice view of the Sea to Sky Highway and the seats are usually quite clean and comfortable.If you need to take a taxi to get to the bus station, that’s going to add onto your overall cost. Likewise, when you arrive in Whistler, you’ll be dropped off at the bus station there. To get to your final destination whether it’s a hotel or a different part of Whistler village, you’ll again need to transfer your gear and find your own transportation. Taking a bus up to Whistler is pretty common, as it’s one of your more affordable options. However, let’s take a look at what a taxi or limousine service has to offer.

TAXI TO WHISTLER

The cost of your average taxi from Vancouver to Whistler will cost you about $300 one way. Unlike a bus, the cost of taking a taxi is per-vehicle with a maximum capacity of 3 people plus gear. So, if you’re heading to Whistler with two other friends, or some other number divisible by 3, it’ll cost you about $100 per person. If you’re travelling with one friend or by yourself, that price goes up significantly to $150 or $300 per person, respectively. Ouch.

Convenience-wise, the taxi is a pretty good choice. Unlike taking a bus, you don’t need to find or pay for your own transportation to the bus station or bending your schedule around the bus’ departure time. You can call a taxi within the hour of whenever you want to leave, and a taxi will come to your location on your schedule. It doesn’t get much more convenient than that. The same goes for where you get dropped off. Where you get dropped off is your choice. You can get dropped off right at your exact destination without having to transfer you and your gear from the bus station to another vehicle.

LIMOUSINE TO WHISTLER

Ok, last but not least, let’s take a look at using a limousine service and see if a limo is ever a more practical choice than taking a bus or taxi. Because limousines are commonly used for special events like weddings, proms or graduations, most people assume that a limousine service is basically never that practical and should be reserved for those special events when there’s a need for luxury. Well, that actually may not be true in some cases. A limousine service can, in fact, be a very affordable and convenient choice.

Let’s talk about convenience first. Like a taxi, and unlike a bus, the limousine will come to your location on your schedule to pick you up and will drop you off at your exact destination. You will have to book the limousine in advance, as you would with a bus, but with a limousine service, you can expect much better service than you would with a taxi. With over 17 million annual passengers (or over 40,000 passengers a day!) making their way in and out of its terminals, Vancouver International Airport (YVR) is the second busiest airport in Canada. Taxi or Limo?
Unless you’re renting a car, getting picked up or taking public transit, your only two other options are to take a cab or a limousine.

Instinctively, most people default to simply taking a taxi to and from the airport. However, many have never compared the two side by side. And if you’re one of the many, you may be pleasantly surprised that a limo can often be cheaper than taking a cab.

Yes, cabs are great for all your last minute transportation needs, on short notice. You can simply step out of the airport, flag a taxi down and hop in. So getting a cab can be convenient at first. However, when you consider the fact that taxis generally are the cleanest of places, drivers may be a little less than polite, and the cab fare can be higher than that of a limousine, suddenly there’s a little more to consider.

1. Make Sure Your Party Size Will Actually Fit Comfortably in the Limo
There is nothing worse than getting all dressed up for your prom or wedding and then be forced to be packed like sardines. If it’s a special enough day to warrant a limo then make sure you will fit in it!  When you’re buying a tent and it says it can fit 10 people, usually that means you can fit 10 people all lying side by side, shoulder to shoulder.  Yes everyone fits in the tent, but it’s probably not a very cozy situation.  Limos are similar.  Packing a 10-person limo with 10 people shoulder to shoulder is alright for shorter rides.  But, if you’re in for a longer ride or just want maximum comfort, you may want to upgrade to a larger vehicle.

2. Make Sure You Book an Appropriate Vehicle
There are so many different types of limos out there now that cater to every type of event. Do you want a sleek, elegant and classy limo for your wedding or do you want an eye catching and humongous party limo for your prom? Both will give you very different experience so do the research and check out the vehicle first!

3. Ask For The Driver’s Business Card
Trust me, it’s an exciting day for you. You’re getting married, going to prom, going on a trip, going out to party—it is very easy to forget details like who your driver is and where he’s supposed to meet you after the party. Get his card so you’ll have his name and number.  It will be that much easier to find him when you’re half drunk or almost passing out from exhaustion at the end of the night.

4. Make a Plan
Before you start your trip or event make sure the driver knows all the details. Where are you going and how long you’re going to be there for.  Is that your final destination or are you making multiple stops?  Will he be waiting for you somewhere or dropping you off? Remember, you might have hired a limo so that you can drink to your heart’s content.  Make sure the driver knows where to deliver you to at the end of the night before you get so inebriated that you can’t communicate what you want. It will just make your night that much smoother.

5. Don’t Smoke in the Car
In many place it is illegal to smoke in a limousine. Many companies forbid it as the smell lingers and will often damage the car and the reputation of the company. If you do smoke, you may very well be charged a damage fee. If you need to smoke, simply ask the driver to pull over.

6. Relax!
Enjoy the experience. Your driver will open the doors for you, he will unload and load your luggage, he will bring you anywhere you want to go. It’s your special night. Enjoy it.

7. Turn on the Tunes
Bring your own DVDs or music.  Many limousines, from sedans to stretch suvs and party buses, come equipped with mp3 player docking stations and or DVD players.  If you’ve got a long trip ahead of you, bring your favorite movies and dvds. The driver might have a few of his own but you’ll be happier with music you prefer.

8. Request Liquor Ahead of Time
Typically most limousines don’t carry liquor unless otherwise specified.

If you want to propose to your girlfriend with flowers, balloons, a red carpet, champagne in ice, just ask for them. Do a google search for “limos” and your search will turn up countless companies that service your city.  The list can be exhausting to deal with especially as you try to sort out other details for your special occasion.

I’ve summarized what I think are the best tips below on finding the best limo company for you:

1. Take the time to see the vehicle
If you are going to spend the money to get a special car for a major event then PLEASE check out the car in person first! Many times websites will stick a top of the line glamorous limo on their site but the reality will shock you! Limos will show their wear and tear after numerous party nights too and you don’t want to welcome your bride or prom date with a weary faded limo instead of the elegant and sleek limo you promised her.

2. References/Referrals
Take a couple of minutes and read the reviews about the limo company. Use Yelp or other local review sites. Or post it on a local chat group. It is definitely worth taking the time to see if other people had good, bad or catastrophically awful experiences with a limo company before signing on.

3. How long have they been in the business?
Although much could be said for going with the newest company in the hopes that they have the “newest” limos – take heed.  Often times they might lack experienced drivers or have poor contingency plans for emergencies. That being said, old companies might very well have worn down limos unless they have been successful in this business (hopefully in those cases they would have maintained their limos well).  Hence the reason I have #1 at the top of my list. MAKE SURE YOU SEE THE VEHICLE FIRSTHAND!

4. Variety
Gone are the days when limos were used for weddings, proms or graduations. Now people use limos to go to the spa, for airport pick ups, bachelor parties, bridal parties, business clients etc. The variety of limousines has likewise expanded to stretch limos, shuttle buses, party buses, stretch SUVS and many more. Take a look around. The larger and more successful companies will obviously have more of a variety which will be more likely to meet your specific need.

5. Safety
You are entrusting the safety of your loved ones on a very important day to a perfect stranger. Make sure that stranger is a licensed experienced driver! Does the company have liability insurance? Are they prepared for emergencies of any kind? Are their vehicles up to date with security and safety standards? Trust me – if you are renting a limo for a special occasion – you do not want that momentous day to turn into a “stranded by the side of the road in my wedding dress” type of day.

6. Cost
And last but certainly not least is the cost. Get multiple quotes if you can. You’d be surprised at the range in prices with different companies. But also be careful that you get a full detailed breakdown of all the costs. Limo companies (like airlines) are very good at adding surcharges and additional costs.

When you’re paying your hard earned money for a luxury service like a limousine rental, you expect to receive top-notch service and vehicle.

Many customers simply aren’t aware of how to validate whether the company they’ve hired is delivering on their promises or not, until it’s too late; you’re stranded on the side of the road on your way to the airport, or you find out after an accident that the limousine’s license has expired.

To ensure you’re getting the excellent service that you expect and deserve, you need to pay attention to these 3 things:

1. Licensed Limo
First off, this is rarely something to worry about (as most companies wouldn’t dare put a limo vehicle into operation without being licensed) but this is something that’s important to quickly verify before you head out. Even if it’s the limo company (and not yourself) that would be incurring some charges if they’re caught, you want to know that you’re not in a vehicle that is just waiting to be pulled over to the side of the road by the police at the most unfortunate time—that unfortunate time being while you’re way to the airport to catch a plane, or you’re rushing to catch a special concert/event, or any other time-sensitive issue.

2. Excellent Condition
Limousines, by their elongated nature, are more prone to being worn down or damaged due to all the extra weight and pressure being exerted on the vehicle, while having the same wheel support as a typical sedan. If you’re able to, verify with the company that the vehicle you are renting has no more than 300,000km on it. The lower the odometer, the better.
The other thing to check on the inside of the limo is that all the air-conditioning outlets are in full working condition.
Before moving to the exterior of the vehicle, the last thing to check is that all the interior lights are in working order. These lights include the bar lights and fiber-optic lighting
Finally, moving onto the exterior, be sure to check for any damage or rust on the body of the limo. A couple minor nicks and scratches on the bumpers is quite normal. Anything more significant should not be there. You’re paying to be transported in supreme style—any significant/obvious dents are unacceptable.

3. Spotlessly Clean
Every limo rental should be spotlessly clean inside and out. Most importantly, the interior should look and smell like it’s brand new, since this is where you’ll be spending most of the time.
Ensure that carpets have been vacuumed, glassware is free of fingerprints, and that it smells great inside. Again, anything less is just unacceptable.
